Eye Yoga: Simple Exercises to Strengthen Your Eyes Naturally
In today's digital age, our eyes are under constant stress — from prolonged screen time, artificial lighting, and reduced outdoor activity. Eye yoga is a series of simple exercises that can help relax your eye muscles, reduce strain, and improve focus and flexibility. Dr. Kunal Nikale at Netram Eye Hospital, Nashik, recommends incorporating these exercises into your daily routine for better eye health.
Important note: Eye yoga exercises are complementary practices to support eye comfort and reduce fatigue. They do not replace glasses, contact lenses, or medical treatment. Always consult your ophthalmologist if you have a diagnosed eye condition before beginning any exercise routine.
Benefits of Eye Yoga
- Reduces digital eye strain and fatigue from prolonged screen use
- Improves focus and the ability to switch between near and distant objects
- Strengthens the six external muscles that control eye movement
- Promotes relaxation and reduces tension headaches related to eye strain
- May improve blood circulation around the eyes
7 Simple Eye Yoga Exercises
1. Palming
Rub your palms together until they are warm. Gently cup them over your closed eyes without pressing on the eyeballs. Hold for 30 seconds and breathe deeply. Repeat 3 times. This is the most relaxing exercise for tired eyes.
2. Blinking
Blink rapidly 10 times, then close your eyes and rest for 20 seconds. Repeat 5 times. Most people blink only 5–7 times per minute when using screens (normal is 15–20 times). Conscious blinking keeps eyes lubricated.
3. Eye Rolling
Slowly roll your eyes in a large clockwise circle, then counterclockwise. Do 5 circles in each direction. This exercises all the external eye muscles and helps reduce stiffness.
4. Near and Far Focus (Focus Shifting)
Hold your thumb 10 cm from your face and focus on it for 5 seconds. Then shift your focus to an object 10 metres away for 5 seconds. Repeat 10 times. This trains the lens of your eye to flex and improves accommodation — especially useful if you spend long hours on screens.
5. The 20-20-20 Rule
Every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This is one of the most evidence-supported techniques for reducing computer-related eye strain, widely recommended by ophthalmologists worldwide.
6. Figure-8 Tracing
Imagine a giant figure-8 on a wall about 3 metres in front of you. Slowly trace the figure-8 with your eyes, going in one direction for 30 seconds, then the other. This improves the flexibility and control of eye movements.
7. Sunning
On a clear day, close your eyes and face the sun. Let the warmth of sunlight fall on your closed eyelids for 5 minutes. Move your head slowly from side to side. Never look directly at the sun with open eyes. This exercise stimulates the retina and helps regulate the light-dark cycle for better sleep and vision comfort.
Best Time to Practice Eye Yoga
- Early morning — when eyes are fresh and well-rested
- Every 1–2 hours during screen work to prevent fatigue
- Before bed — palming and slow breathing help relax the eyes after a long day
When Eye Yoga Is Not Enough
Eye yoga is a wonderful preventive practice, but it cannot treat existing eye conditions. If you experience persistent blurriness, pain, redness, or headaches, these may be signs of a refractive error, dry eye disease, or another condition requiring medical attention. Do not rely on exercises alone.
